LONDON -- Harrison Smith rested his forehead on the seat in front of him, fighting the urge to fall asleep in the back row of the team bus.

In the previous 48 hours, the Minnesota Vikings had fallen to 0-3 with a brutal loss to the Cleveland Browns, awoken for an early workout, packed their bags, taken an overnight flight and bused directly to Wembley Stadium, where they put about 200 British schoolchildren through drills at a community event tied to Sunday's international series game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Smith, like many of his teammates, had popped an Ambien and assumed he'd be out the moment he buckled his seat belt on the airplane. But the second-year safety found himself in a "zombie-ish" state as he rode another shuttle to the team's temporary headquarters.

"I didn't realize how much (the sleep deprivation) would affect recovery from the previous game," Smith told USA TODAY Sports on Tuesday afternoon, a still-fresh bruise exposed on his right biceps as the bus stopped and started toward the northern borough of Watford. "I don't care how much treatment they give us. Nothing beats sleep."

Kevin Willims Back in Boots

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams should be "ready to go" on Sunday when the team plays the Chicago Bears, coach Leslie Frazier said Friday.

The six-time Pro Bowler missed the Vikings' season-opening loss at Detroit because of a hyperextended right knee suffered on a low block by San Francisco's Joe Looney in Minnesota's third preseason game. It was the first regular-season game Williams missed to injury since 2005.

Williams is listed as probable on the Vikings' injury report, and though he missed practice because of a personal matter Friday, he showed enough in practice Wednesday and Thursday to convince Frazier he's healthy enough to play Sunday against the Bears (1-0).

"We'll have to monitor how he's doing in between series, just talk to him sometimes," Frazier said. "Based on what happened after practice [on Thursday], he was feeling good."

Kevin Williams Misses Practice and Ruled Out of Season Opener

By Sean Jensen - Pioneer Press

Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams has been ruled out for Sunday's opener in Detroit, but he said he's "really hopeful" he will play Sept. 15 against the Chicago Bears.

"It's a big improvement from last week," Williams said Friday of his knee injury. "Just trying to get that bone bruise healed."

Williams said he could have pushed himself to play against the Lions.

"But what's the use in trying to do that and then you miss four more (games)?" Williams asked.

Williams was injured after a controversial low block by San Francisco 49ers backup offensive guard Joe Looney on Aug. 25. Looney wasn't penalized for the play or disciplined by the NFL.

An MRI showed that Williams had a significant bone bruise and a posterior capsular strain. He didn't practice all week, and coach Leslie Frazier ruled him out Friday.

How confident is Williams he will be ready to play in Game 2 against Chicago?

"I'd be shocked if I didn't," Williams said.
